The Preflight

After arriving from Male onboard a Qatar Airways B77W in QSuites, we had a three-hour layover in Doha. We quickly cleared through security and made our way to the excellent Al Mourjan Business Lounge. There was a large number of passengers waiting to get into the lounge. Access is allowed only for passengers flying Qatar Airways Business Class or Oneworld business class. Oneworld status holders (Sapphire and Emerald) are directed to a different lounge in the airport.

Since we were traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic, all lounge staff were masked.

To the right of the entrance was a water pool as well as the staircase that led upstairs to the dining room.

Along the windows were some tables as well as sofas.

There were a variety of drinks and coffee available self-serve.

The main dining room was located up the stairs.

There was a variety of self-serve individually packaged food available including hummus and falafel sandwiches.

There was a sushi station with a chef.

Next to the sushi bar was a salad bar.

There was also a huge bread station.

Hot food included a mix of soup, curries, and middle eastern food served by staff members behind plexiglass.

There was also a huge dessert station with decadent cakes.

Qatar Airways also provided an a la carte menu.

In the middle of the lounge was a wide-open space with ample amounts of chairs and sofas.

Further into the lounge was a quiet room with individual suites.

There were also shower rooms separated by gender. I requested a room and was immediately taken to one that was available.

It was very nicely stocked with toiletries and amenities.

We made our way to the gate area at around midnight an hour before our departure time. There was a line for document checks and then a secondary security screen prior to entering the gate area. Luckily, there were separate lines for business class passengers and we were through in about 10 minutes.

I was really excited about this flight as it was the first time that I would be flying the long-range version of the B777, the B777-200LR.

Our B777-200LR, registration A7-BBD, was an 11 year old aircraft delivered brand new to Qatar Airways in Dec 2009. She was one of nine -200LRs in the Qatar fleet.

Boarding began at 00:30 via doors 1L and 2L. Business class passengeres used the first door while economy passengers boarded via the second door.

The Flight

Qatar Airways features 42 business class QSuites on board their B777-200LRs arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration in two separate cabins.

Our seats were 5E and F in the middle section of the first cabin which has a total of 24 seats. Odd numbered rows faced backwards while even numbered rows faced forward.

The odd numbered seats in the middle were also arranged right next to each other, separated by a middle divider.

Once the divider was lowered, the two seats turned into a twin suite right next to each other. Perfect for couples.

Each seat was 21 inches wide with even more shoulder room on the sides and in between the seats. The headrest was adjustable and very comfortable as well with great padding.

Pitch was over 103 inches and even when stretching my legs out I did not feel restricted.

QSuites offered a massive IFE entertainment screen that was highly responsive and high resolution.

Beneath the IFE screen was the large and sturdy bi-fold tray table.

The doorway offered ample space to get in and out of the seat without having the fold-up the tray table.

In the corner of the suite was a large table top with a nice marble design. There was a small storage shelf below.

There was an extensive amount of seat controls which allowed us to heavily customize the seat position.

The IFE remote was once of the nicer ones with a separate screen and multiple buttons.

Each seat also had a USB port, 110V outlet, headphone jack, USB streaming port, HDMI streaming port, and a tap-to-pay credit card reader.

At the bottom was a small space for storing shoes.

Next to the door was a small reading light as well as coat hook.

Below the reading light was a small cushion that covered a storage bin.

Within the storage bin was a water bottle, headphone, and bag. The bin had compartments of varying sizes which was perfect for glasses, tablets, phones, etc.

Waiting for us at the seat was an amenity kit, sanitizing kit, and wrapped blanket.

Immediately after we took our seats, the flight crews came by to ask what we would like to drink. Qatar Airways offers and open bar onboard their flights and I had a glass of the delicious rose. It was served with a refreshing towel.

There were two types of Brics amenity kits on this flight and my fiance and I each got one.

Contents included socks, eyeshade, lip blam, facial mist, and lotion.

The protective kit had a face mask, gloves, and hand sanitizer.

The Oryx One branded noise cancelling headphones were fairly good quality for business class.

We were each also given a bottle of water.

Bedding included a fairly comfortable pillow.

The fluffy blanket came wrapped in plastic.

Each passenger was alsio given The White Company branded pajamas. The top and bottom were comfortable and the slippers well cushioned.

We pushed back on time at 01:10AM in the morning and had a 25 minute taxi to the runway. At 1:35AM we began the takeoff roll sitting facing the rear of the plane.

Unforutantely, the B777-200LRs did not have nose or outside cameras.

Fifteen minutes later, the flight attendants came through the cabin to take our dinner orders. While Qatar Airways offers a dine-on-demand service, meaning you can eat whenever during the flight, I decided to eat first. My fiance went straight to sleep.

Service was a bit slower than I would have liked. Fourty minutes after take-off a small ramekin of mixed nuts was served. I went with a glass of the Pommery Brut Royal champage.

To start, I had the Arabic Mezze which was served covered due to COVID-19 precautions. This course came almost an hour after takeing off.

The mezze consisted of muhammmara, touleh, and hummus. Eaten with warmed pita it was tasty.

Next, I had a bowl of the daily soup which was a hearty potato soup.

I went with the Chilean Sea Bass and grilled shrimp for my main. While the fish was cooked perfectly, I found the saffron sauce way too buttery.

The only dessert option was a trio of cannolini. The three different flavors included key lime, avocado, and vanila which were all excellent.

Once my table was cleared, I went to go change into the pajamas. By this time, the cabin lights had been dimmed with mood lighting and all passengers had their doors closed. I loved the amount of privacy the suites had.

The lavatory was very well stocked with amenities and was larger than the standard B777 lavatories on other carriers.

The lavatory also had shaving kits and toothbrushes.

Additional amenities included facial water and hand lotion from diptyque.

As we were both getting changed, the flight attendants set up our beds. We came back to a very inviting double bed with two fluffy pillows, firm comforter, and silken smooth blanket.

Each suite also had the option to turn the seat lettering red to signal do-not-disturb.

We both closed the doors to our suite and tried to get some sleep. I appreciated the fact that the walls of the suite were high enough it was hard to peek over them.

I managed to get a few hours of sleep and woke-up as we crossed over Europe.

I had a cappacino which was served with a ginger cookie.

For the rest of the flight I had the flight map on the IFE remote and watched a few movies and TV shows on the main screen.

Feeling a bit hungry, I had the afternoon tea set about nine hours after takeoff. It came with an assortment of finger sandwiches, two scones, clotted cream, pistachio cake, and berry quiche. These snacks were all phenomenal and tasty.

My fiance and I also shared the cheese plate. The variety of cheese and sliced fruit with crackers were delicious.

I watched a few more TV shows as we crossed over Greenland into North America.

Five hours later, my fiance and I decided to have breakfast. My fiance went with the assiette of cold cuts which was served with fresh fruit and greek yoghurt.

I decided to have the excellent black mushroom crepe with scrambled eggs, veal sausage, and grilled potates.

Once we finished breakfast, flight attendants came by with Godiva chocolates and mints.

The cabin was prepped for landing almost an hour our of Dallas. We began our descent fifteen minutes later.

Exactly sixteen hours after we took-off from Doha, we landed in DFW at 9:34AM local time. The taxi to the gate took about twenty minutes and then we were off to clear customs and collect our bags before our final flight back up to Chicago. Thanks for the ride!

  • Distance: 2,106miles
  • Flight Time: 4hrs 3min

  • Arrival: 9:38PM

The Preflight

After arriving from the seaplane terminal via bus, our W Maldives representative personally escorted us through security (which also scanned our Health Declaration forms) to the Qatar Airways check-in counters. We actually got to the check-in counters at 4PM, but the counters didn’t open until 4:45PM. For those 45 minutes, our representative actually waited with us the entire time.

Once the check-in counters opened, the agent verified our negative COVID-19 test, Qatar Airways attestation form, and CDC form. Our bags were checked through to Dallas-Fort Worth, and our boarding passes were printed.

Our W Maldives escort then guided us towards to escalators up to the immigration checkpoint and bid us farewell. We made our way up to the immigration area which was relatively empty. They re-scanned our Health Declaration Departure and then stamped our passports and boarding pass. Security was fast and we were airside in 10 minutes.

Qatar Airways and the vast majority of other airlines give their business class passengers access to the Leeli Lounge which is the only lounge in the international terminal. Access could also be purchased for $35USD per person at the door.

The lounge offered a large amount of individual sofas in three large seating areas. Some had power ports for charging devices.

There was also a self-serve buffet area and the menu was provided on a screen at the entrance. All passengers had to hand sanitize before entering.

Drink options included Coke products, water, sparkling water, and tonic water. There were also salad, cake, and yogurt in the refrigerator.

Next to the fridge was a self-serve espresso machine. There was also tea but the hot water dispenser was out of service.

There was also some fresh juice. Of note, no alcohol was available in the lounge.

Other cold food options included pre-sliced fruit.

Hot food items included rice, stir-fried noodles, Thai beef curry, and carrots. There was also a cream of chicken soup.

Additional snacks included sandwiches, brownies, pound cake, candy, cookies, and bread.

There was also fresh fruit, egg quiche, and croissants.

The lounge also offered cup noodles.

We spent a total of 90 minutes in the lounge and a boarding announcement was made in the lounge for our flight. The gate area was located a floor below the main terminal area and all gates led to busses.

Business class passengers had a dedicated bus and the bus left after about five minutes.

Boarding was done via two separate air stairs. Since we were located in the forward cabin, we took the one leading to door 1L.

Our B777-300ER, registration A7-BAI, was one of 48 B77Ws in the Qatar Airways fleet. She was leased from Taqa Leasing and delivered brand new in October 2008.

The Flight

Luckily for us, our B77W today was equipped with Qatar Airways’ award-winning QSuites business class seat. We had flown the previous generation B/E Minipod B77Ws two years earlier from Colombo to Doha. There are two configurations of the B777-300ERs equipped with QSuites; one has 24 QSuites and 388 economy seats while the other has 42 QSuites and 312 economy seats. Ours was the latter with 42 QSuites spread over two cabins.

Our QSuites were 5E and 5F (true honeymoon seats) located in the center of the forward business class cabin. The center divider was initially raised but was lowered by the flight attendants once we got to our seats.

Each QSuite offers 79 inches of pitch and a seat width of 21.5 inches. The seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration that alternates between forward and backward facing as well as closer to the aisle or window. Even-numbered seats are forward-facing but are closer to the aisle. Odd-numbered seats are rear-facing but closer to the window (or the center).

Our double QSuite was enormous. This is by far the best arrangement for couples as we had unrestricted access to each other.

The legroom was very generous and I had more than enough space to stretch out without feeling restricted.

At each seat was a massive touchscreen inflight entertainment screen. It was fast, responsive, and high quality.

Directly below the IFE screen was the very large and sturdy bi-fold tray table.

The footwell was below the tray table and was able to accommodate my size 11 feet. It was also wide enough for me to comfortably lie supine. What I did not like was that the tray table directly took away space from the footwell.

Adjacent to the IFE screen was a counter top, shelf, and seat controls. The doors to the QSuite were locked for boarding, taxi, and takeoff.

The countertop was large enough to accommodate all of the amenities that Qatar Airways provided.

Below the counter was a small shelf where the menus were placed. Below the shelf were buttons that controlled the “Do Not Disturb” light and overhead reading light. Seat controls included options for recline, lumbar support, massage, and forward-backward movement. There were preset buttons for takeoff, dining, lounging, and sleeping.

Below the seat controls were the IFE remote with a second screen, universal power outlet, two USB ports, headphone jack, HDMI port, and contactless payment pad.

The seat padding was very comfortable and had a cushy headrest.

Next to the headrest was a small reading lamp and coat hook.

While there was no true armrest but there was a storage bin with a leather cushion top.

Inside the storage compartment was a water bottle holder, headphone bin, thin deep bin, shallow bin, and wide deep bin.

Immediately upon boarding and taking our seats, the flight attendants came by to ask us what we would like to drink. Options included either water (still/sparkling), orange juice, champagne, or mint tea. A packaged refreshing towel was provided in place of the usual warm/cold towels.

Due to COVID-19, Qatar Airways also provided a protective kit which included a face mask, gloves, and sanitizing gel.

There was also a small amenity kit that included socks, eye mask, and lip balm. Qatar Airways does offer a more substantial amenity kit on their longer duration flights.

There was also a pair of noise-cancelling headphones which were OK.

A bottle of water was also waiting at the seat.

There was also a comfortable pillow at the seat.

A very warm blanket was also provided wrapped in plastic.

Boarding was completed just 23 minutes after we boarded the plane. The business class cabin was almost 100% full while economy had maybe just 20 or so passengers. We pushed back at 7:21PM and during the taxi to the runway, our meal orders were taken.

At 7:35PM we took off of runway 36 bound for Doha.

I was able to both watch the airshow on the IFE remote while also browsing the main screen.

15 minutes after takeoff, the purser came by to personally introduce herself and unlock the QSuite doors. Next, our flight attendant came by with a glass of the Gosset Brut Grand Rose and a ramekin of warmed nuts. Boy, have I missed warmed nuts on flights…

The main meal service started 30 minutes after I finished the nuts, a bit delayed possibly due to the large size of the business class cabin. To start, I had a bowl of the delicious tomato soup. It was served on a tray along with packaged warmed bread and some butter.

For my main, I went with the king prawns with asparagus, potatoes, cherry tomato in a dill cream sauce. It was tasty but very heavy.

My significant other had the excellent chicken biryani with raita. It was delicious.

For dessert, we both had the chocolate mousse with golden pearls.

The entire meal service was completed in 40 minutes and we still had about two hours and 30 minutes until landing. I browsed the Oryx One entertainment system a bit before deciding to try and get some sleep.

Just before trying to take a nap, I went to use one of the forward lavatories. There are two directly behind the cockpit and two more in between the business class cabins.

The lavatory was massive and very nicely designed.

Amenities included shaving kits, dental kits, soap, and lotion.

Once I got back to my seat I made my bed and got ready to nap. Unfortunately, Qatar Airways does not provide turn down service, pajamas, or a mattress pad on their shorter flights.

The footwell did not feel very restrictive at all.

We both closed our doors and managed to get an hour of napping. Thanks to the high walls and thick door provided a great amount of privacy for us in the suite.

As we neared Doha, the flight crew came by and passed out nice Godiva chocolates.

We began our descent around 11:20PM and 17 minutes later we landed in Doha.

The taxi to the gate took about seven minutes. Luckily, we were at a real gate rather than a bus gate and soon we were off to security for our next flight to Dallas.

Thanks for the ride!

Trip Report: Qatar Airways (B777-300ER) QSuites (Business) DOH-ORD

The Details

  • Flight: QR725
  • Aircraft: B777-300ER
  • Class: QSuites/Business
  • Seat: 3E and 3F
  • Route: Doha Hamad International (DOH)-Chicago O’Hare International (ORD)
  • Distance: 7,334 miles
  • Duration: 14hrs 51min
  • Departure: 8:41AM
  • Arrival: 1:49PM

The Preflight

After my significant other and I arrived from Colombo, we had a long 18 hour layover in Doha. Since it was my SO’s first time in Doha, we decided to take advantage of the Qatar Airways complimentary tour of Doha. It was a great opportunity for us to see downtown Doha without any out of pocket cost.

We returned to Hamad International around midnight and made our way to the dedicated check-in area for business class passengers.

Clearing security was a breeze with just one other passenger in line with us. We then made our way to the excellent Al Mourjan Business Lounge which is only accesible to passengers flying QR business class.

To the right of the entrance was a waterfall and staircase leading to the dining room.

The dining room upstairs had two open buffet tables as well as a bar.

Below the dining room was an area with comfortable blue sofas. There were also some breakfast pastries and espresso machine.

Behind these large curtains was a great view of the apron.

To the left of the entrance was a open area with a large amount of sofas.

Further into the lounge on the right was another dining area that offered made to order sandwiches.

Past the sandwich dining room was a quiet area with individual open suites that each had a large couch and TV. Unfortunately, all of the suites were taken by the time we tried to get one.

My significant other and I both decided to get a shower before trying to sleep in the lounge. The shower rooms were segregated by sex and each shower suite was very well appointed.

After showing, we managed to find a private area with individual lounge chairs available. We both tried to get some sleep as there was still about six hours until boarding.

We both managed to get some rest and I awoke to my phones vibration telling us we had 30 minutes until boarding. There was a secondary screening required for our flight to Chicago and by the time we got through, boarding had already begun at 7AM.

Our B777-300ER, registration A7-BEN, was delivered brand new to Qatar Airways in December 2017. She had a pair of enormous GE90s and was line number 1523.

The Flight

Qatar Airways features four different layouts aboard their B777-300ERs. Two B77W variants have the old B/E Aerospace MiniPod seat while the other two offer the excellent QSuites in business class. One QSuite B777 variant has 24 business and 388 economy seats while the other QSuite variant has 42 business and 312 economy seats.

Our B77W today was the premium heavy QSuite layout with a total of 42 closed suites in a 1-2-1 configuration in two separate cabins. Our seats 3E and 3F were in the forward business cabin between doors 1 and 2.

This pair was the honeymoon seat combo with a divider that could be lowered completely.

Each seat was 21.5″ wide and had a pitch and bed length of 79″.

When the divider was down completely, the two seats essentially became one as there was no barrier at all.

Each QSuite had an enormous, crisp, high definition, touchscreen IFE screen.

The tray table popped out from below the IFE screen and above the foot well. I really liked the size of the foot well which was big enough for my size 12 feet.

At our seats was a small pillow, a blanket, and the new Qatar amenity kits on the counter top space to the right of the screen. Gone are the old Brics hard-shell kits.

Below the counter top was a small shelf perfect for passport and tablets.

The seat controls, IFE remote , 110V outlet, HDMI port, headphone jack and USB port were below.

Personally, I love when the IFE remote screen can double as a second screen for streaming entertainment.

Between the aisle and the side of the seat was a small storage bin where there was a bottle of Evian water, headphones, and literature magazines. The storage bin was large enough for our amenity kit and a small purse.

The fully enclosed suite had a sliding door. I may have moved it back and forth a few times…. With the doors closed there was a distinct private feel to the suite.

To the right of the headrest was a reading light and coat hook.

Each seat had a “Do Not Disturb” function which changed the illuminated seat light to red.

The cabin was beautiful. It felt both classy and minimal.

The contents of the beautiful amenity kit included ear plugs, eye mask, socks, Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio lip balm, facial moisturizer, and hand cream. I loved the local design on the kit itself with a signature Qatari dhow.

The Oryx One branded headphones were average and I used my own Bose headphones.

Once we were situated, flight attendants came by with The White Company pajamas and slippers. The pajamas were so incredibly lightweight and comfortable, so much so that my significant other occasionally wears them around the house.

There was a nice pillow at the seat.

Additionally, there was a lighter small pillow with the inscription “Beautiful destinations often lead to everlasting memories” .

Shortly after we boarded, our lovely flight attendants came by and asked what we would like to drink. The pre-departure beverage was open bar and we could have anything from the menu. I had a flute of excellent Atair Etoile Rose. There was a also choice of hot or cold scented towel and I opted for the hot towel.

Our flight attendant also explained the concept of dine-on-demand and that we could have anything we wanted, whenever we wanted, during the flight.

The beverage menu was identical to the menu on our previous flight.

While our scheduled departure was supposed to be 7:45AM, we actually pushed back around 8AM. The taxi to the runway was long as we were part of the morning departure bank from DOH. Finally at 8:41AM we were airborne.

Fifteen minutes after take-off flight attendants came through with a beverage service and warmed nuts. I switched to the Lallier Champagne which was poured at the seat.

Refills of both my champagne and ramekin of nuts were pro-actively offered.

We decided to have breakfast immediately after take-off and the cabin crew set up our tables for dining. The electric candle made the dining experience feel intimate, especially once the suite doors were closed. We were given a bread basket and a tumbler of water.

I started off with the assiette of cold cuts. There was sliced turkey, cured beef , and mature cheddar with some boiled egg. This dish was average.

For my main breakfast meal I had the Traditional Arabic Breakfast. It was amazing. The feta cheese was tangy and crumbly, the mint was fresh and aromatic. In the bowl was ful medames, which is a stew of cooked fava beans in cumin and spices. It was topped with fresh tomatoes, parsley, and lemon juice. The pita bread was toasted perfectly and dipping the pita into the ful was simply divine.

My partner had the emmental cheese omelet with chicken herb patties and Lyonnaise potatoes. They enjoyed the omelets and said the patties were flavorful.

One thing I love about the QSuite seat is that even when the tray table is fully deployed, there was enough room for me to get up out of the seat without having to move the table.

To finish, we both had a cup of saffron karak chai (my favorite warm drink aboard Qatar Airways) which was served with a chocolate cookie.

Flight attendants made another pass through the cabin with warmed towels and a mint after the meal service.

Once we finished breakfast, both of us decided it way time to get some sleep. Sleeping in the lounge had been rough the night before and we were ready to take advantage of the QSuite bed.

Qatar Airways offers an amazing turn down service for the QSuite bed which entails adding a mattress pad, padding for in between the seats to even both of them out, and an extra sleeping pillow. The end result was a beautiful and extremely comfortable fully enclosed two bed suite.

They did a fantastic job of making the bed feel welcoming.

I found the bed to feel almost like an actual bed with the cushioning from the pad and the thick velvety blanket. The foot well had ample room for me to stretch out.

I managed to sleep almost six hours on this flight which was a testament to how comfortable it was.

Upon waking up, I was slightly hungry and decided to try a sampling of the snack menu. I had the crispy blue croquettes, white chocolate covered dates, and a chicken shawarma wrap.

Once my significant other woke up, we got the afternoon tea set to share. The scones were warmed perfectly and served with genuine clotted cream. The finger sandwich were smoked salmon, cucumber, and curried chicken. All three of the sandwiches were great. The chocolate cake and fruit tart were excellent as well. She another cup of the excellent karak chai.

With two hours until landing, we opted to have lunch. Our tables were set again with a bread basket. I started with the Signature Arabic Mezze. It featured traditional hummus, fresh tabouleh, and moutabel (eggplant dip) with warmed pita. Delicious.

For my main I had the grilled tenderloin of beef with Béarnaise sauce. Regrettably, the beef was cooked medium-well.

We both shared the cheese plate which was wonderful. I enjoyed the variety of crackers which I feel many other airlines neglect. The cheese selection consisted of an excellent Bleu d’Auvergne, Pont-I’Eveque, and provolone. Accompaniments included date paste cubes, thinly sliced carrots, and fresh grapes.

The highlight of the meal was the dessert. We shared a sticky toffee and date pudding that was warmed to a perfect temperature. It was gooey and over the top decadent. There was a crispy caramel piece a top and garnished Arabic dates. A bed of rich butterscotch sauce brought this dish to another level. This was my favorite airline dessert hands down.

I finished lunch with an Americano.

We had a smooth final into Chicago O’Hare and touched down at 1:49PM local time. The taxi to Terminal 5 was quick by O’Hare standards. Upon deplaning we were big a hearty farewell by the amazing cabin crew.

In my opinion, Qatar Airways is well deserving of their title as the Airline of the Year for 2019 and Worlds Best Business Class. The crew was incredibly warm, friendly, and ever accommodating. They were always passing through the cabin, offering drink refills, and water. The dine on demand service and expansive in-flight menu was exceptional. In addition, the comfortable bedding and the ability to cuddle with my partner made this an incredible experience; one that I will remember for a very long time.

  • Class: Business
  • Seat: 2A and 2B
  • Route: Colombo Bandaranaike International (CMB)-Doha Hamad International DOH
  • Distance: 2,428 miles
  • Duration: 5hrs 12min
  • Departure: 11:09AM
  • Arrival: 2:02PM

The Preflight

After spending a adventurous week in Sri Lanka, including a few wonderful nights in Ella, it was time for my significant other and I to return home to Chicago. Our routing was going to be CMB-DOH then DOH-ORD with an overnight layover in Doha.

We took called an Uber from the Hilton Colombo to take us to Colombo International and had a very eventful journey. Our Uber driver was pulled over by the police and we had a few tense minutes wondering if our driver was going to be arrested…

Anyways, we arrived at Bandaranaike International three and a half hour prior to departure. Check-in was via the dedicated Business class lane and we got our boarding passes after about 10 minutes in line. Once past customs and security we made our way to the Araliya Lounge. We tried to use the SriLankan Lounge but were surprisingly turned away by lounge staff.

From the terminal there were great views of the apron and remote stands. I spotted quite a few aircraft I had never seen before including an Oman Air B737 MAX.

Boarding began promptly and was done via bus. The entire process was insane and there were hundreds of people cramped in the small bus waiting area. Luckily, there was a dedicated business class bus which whisked us away from the madhouse of a gate area.

Our B777-300ER, registration A7-BEC, was delivered brand new to Qatar Airways in August 2014. She was actually leased to Royal Air Maroc for three months in 2019 before being returned to Qatar Airways in September 2019.

The Flight

Qatar Airways currently has two different versions of the B77Ws that do not have QSuites. One version has 24 business and 388 economy class seats. Our aircraft featured 42 lie-flat B/E Aerospace Minipods in a 2-2-2 configuration in two separate cabins along with 316 economy seats.

The larger business class cabin had four rows of six seats between the first two pairs of doors. There was a separate smaller cabin of three rows of business class after the second pair of doors.

We were seated in row two on this flight. Each seat was 21.8″ wide with 78″ of pitch. Awaiting us at our seats were a pillow, blanket, and amenity kit. There was an extendable privacy divider between the seats as well. Each seat also featured a reading lamp. I found the cushioning on the seat to be excellent and very comfortable.

There was a leg rest which felt flimsy when resting my legs on them.

The IFE screen was located in the seatback.

The screen itself was very dated and had poor definition.

There was a large storage bin below the IFE screen. There was also a separate storage bin for shoes and a literature pocket.

The center console had an additional literature pocket. The massive, heavy, but sturdy bi-fold tray table was also stored in the center.

Under the counter top at each seat was another storage space which when opened had a water bottle.

Below the center armrest was a USB charger and headphone jack. There was no 110V outlet for charging larger electronics.

In the left armrest were the seat controls which included options for lumbar support and massaging. The IFE remote was stored in the right armrest.

I appreciated how the IFE remote screen also allowed for separate streaming from the main screen.

The amenity kit contents were an eye mask, socks, and lip balm.

The lavatories were stocked with toothbrushes and shaving kits.

Qatar Airways also provided Oryx One branded headphones which were average.

The pillow was comfy and firm.

A plastic wrapped blanket was also at each seat. It was heavy and the cloth felt great.

After boarding, a friendly flight attendant came by and asked what we would like to drink. I had a glass of Lallier Grande Reserve while my partner had a glass of the Atair Etoile Rose. We were offered a choice between hot or cold scented towels.

Our lovely flight attendant then explained the inflight service to us and distributed the menus. She described the dine-on-demand concept and a few minutes later asked what we would like to have for lunch and when.

Our flight attendant also asked what we would like to drink with our main meal.

At 11:09 we began our pushback and taxied to the runway. Colombo airport was undergoing a massive amount of construction.

We had a smooth climb and passed over the beautiful Sri Lankan coastline.

Service began with another glass of champagne and some warmed nuts.

There was a slight mix-up with our meal service and my main was served before the appetizer. I had the slow cooked lamb with herb lemon jus. The dish was rather disappointing as the lamb was tough and dry. I picked at the slightly under-cooked carrots and the mashed potatoes. We were also given individual bread baskets.

For my appetizer I had the chicken and sweet pepper kebab served with sun-dried tomato salad and tomato chutney. Unfortunately, the chicken was also cooked dry and not very flavorful.

For dessert I had the red velvet cake. It was also dry…

After the meal flight attendants came by with another round of warm towels. My significant other had a Karak Chai.

I ordered an Americano and was also given a box of Godiva chocolates.

The meal service was over in two hours and by then we were passing above India.

I set up my bed and managed to nap for about an hour and a half. The blanket was very very comfortable.

In no time we were passing by the artificial islands of Doha on final into DOH.

We landed and quickly taxied to the main terminal. No bus for us today!

I felt that this was a fine five hour flight from Colombo to Doha. The food was not the best but I wasn’t expecting anything spectacular originating from Colombo. Otherwise, despite the small hiccup of my main being served before my appetizer the service was excellent. Qatar Airways is one carrier I will always choose before others if given the option simply due to phenomenal service and great alcohol selection.

The Preflight

After spending two days exploring Doha, I was ready for the next leg of my journey to Tokyo. I took a short cab ride from the hotel and arrived at the dedicated check in area within the terminal for First and Business Class passengers three hours before the scheduled departure time. I wanted to be able to fully explore the Qatar Airways business class airport experience.

It was a beautiful and elegantly designed area with seating and individual desks for check-in. I was the only passenger at 4AM in the morning.

Once checked-in I made my way to the Al Mourjan Business Lounge. This lounge is only accessible to passengers flying Qatar Airways business class.

Immediately to the right of the entrance was a water fountain area and stairs to the buffet dining area.

Upstairs was the buffet dining area. Breakfast was served during my time there.

There was also a staffed bar in the buffet dining area.

Going back down the stairs and to the left of the main entrance was a large seating area. The middle was filled with lounge chairs and some greenery.

Continuing further to the left of the entrance on the other side of the lounge was another dining room with made-to-order sandwiches.

Large private cubicles were available as well for sleeping in.

I decided to have a quick shower before my flight. Qatar Airways offers separate shower rooms for men and women. Each individual room was modern and had excellent water presser.

I managed to snag a few pictures of the long-haul Qatar Airways fleet during my time in the lounge. I would be flying on an A350 for the flight to Tokyo.

Our A350, registration A7-ALE, was delivered to Qatar in October 2015. Boarding began promptly at 6:15AM.

A350

The Flight

Qatar Airways features one of my favorite business class seats aboard their A350-900s, the Super Diamond reverse herringbone seat. Each seat had 80 inches of sleep space and 22 inches of width. The seats were incredibly stylish with the trimmed wood design and dark red color.

There are a total of 36 business class seats split between a large cabin between doors 1 and 2 and a mini cabin extending past door 2. Economy featured 247 seats in a 3-3-3 configuration.

The seats had multiple adjustable options and had a built-in massage function. Below the seat controls were a 110V outlet and USB port.

Next to the power outlets was a storage bin. It was deep enough to store my phone and passport.

To the right of the seat was a small storage bin where the headphones were stored.

The IFE screen was massive, modern, and very responsive to touch. Qatar Airways also installed a tail cam.

The foot well was moderately sized but felt more constrained compared to the other reverse herringbone seats such as those aboard Cathay Pacific’s A330s or American Airline’s A330s. Below the IFE screen was the stowed tray table. The tray table was a massive and heavy double-fold table.

Qatar Airways also elected to remove storage bins from the middle of the aircraft which gave the cabin an airy feel.

At each seat was a Bric’s amenity kit, comfy pillow, and thick blanket.

An Evian water bottle was also at the seat in a dedicated cup holder.

The amenity was well provisioned. There was lip balm, facial mist, hand lotion, socks, and an eye mask.

A very comfortable set of pajamas was also handed out.

Having heard rave reviews about Qatar Airways’ excellent on-board service I had high expectations coming into this flight. I was not disappointed. I was greeted at the door by two friendly Japanese flight attendants who bowed and welcomed me aboard. When I responded in English, they immediately switched from Japanese to English.

Upon taking my seat I was offered a hot towel and beverage of choice. I decided to have an Americano which was nicely presented. Afterwards, I switched to a rose.

Menus were also distributed. Qatar Airways offers dine-on-demand, meaning I could have anything from the menu at any time. Breakfast was the main course on this flight.

There was also an extensive cocktail and beverage menu.

As well as a detailed wine list.

The business cabin was entirely full for this flight. We pushed back on time at 7AM and had a very smooth take off.

I watched the tail cam as we cruised over the Persian Gulf.

Another round of beverages were offered once we reached cruising altitude over Iran.

For breakfast I decided to have the Japanese Kaiseki set breakfast. It was beautifully presented and very tasty. The grilled flounder was excellent with a crispy skin and the various pickled vegetables refreshing. Dare I say better than the one I had aboard ANA First Class?

I also had a selection of nigiri and sushi. The quality was incredible and the best fish I’ve had in the air. Akin to quality I’d expect in a restaurant on the ground.

I concluded the meal with another glass of champagne (my fourth…) and a ramekin of cold nuts. Each passenger was also given a box of Godiva chocolates.

I settled into the seat and watched a couple movies. Since this flight left in the morning from Doha I was wide awake the entire trip.

Qatar Airways also decided to install window blinds instead of shades on most of their new A350s which gave the cabin a fancier vibe.

Midway through the flight I checked out the bar in between the forward and small business class cabins. Flight attendants had set up a self-serve food area. Options included fresh fruit, chocolates, and bags of chips.

Just another view of the forward business cabin giving a sense of how open and airy it felt.

I cannot say enough good things about this flight crew. Every 10 minutes or so a flight attendant would pass through the cabin and check on all of the passengers. I was proactively offered multiple refills of my champagne which I had to start turning down. Water was also offered proactively.

As the sun set over the East China Sea I decided to have dinner. Having loved the Japanese options, I continued down the Japanese menu and had the grilled fillet of beef with Teriyaki sauce.

Again the catering was amazing. The beef was medium-rare and not a second overcooked. The side of grilled salmon was also tasty.

As we began the approach into HND, I switched over to the tail camera.

We landed about 15 minutes ahead of schedule and had a very quick taxi to the gate. I was through customs and immigration in no time and quickly on my way to the AirBnb where I would be meeting my family.

Qatar Airways hands down offered on of the best business class experiences I have had the privilege of experiencing. The lounge was amazing, seat comfortable, flight attendants attentive, and food phenomenal. I cannot say enough good things about Qatar Airways and look forward to flying them again!
