  • Seat: 4A
  • Route: Philadelphia International (PHL)-Chicago O’Hare International (ORD)
  • Distance: 677 miles
  • Duration: 2hrs 7min
  • Departure: 5:57PM
  • Arrival: 6:40PM

The Preflight

Since my original itinerary MIA-DFW, DFW-ORD was derailed due to a mechanical issue with the MIA-DFW aircraft, I flew MIA-PHL instead. Luckily the MIA-PHL had no mechanical issues and arrived on time. I had a short 55 minute connection at PHL and spent the time plane-spotting.

There were quiet a few widebodies at PHL today including a British Airways B747-400 and a variety of American Airlines widebodies.

Our A321 today, registration N549UW, was delivered to US Airways in Nov 2011. She was formally transferred over to American Airlines in Sept 2015 after the merger between the two airlines.

Boarding began on time at 5:10PM.

N549UW

The Flight

American Airlines currently has two distinct sub-fleets of A321s. One sub-fleet consists of all the legacy US Airways (LUS) A321s (called “Classic”) while the other sub-fleet consists of all the legacy American Airlines (LAA) A321s (called “Enhanced”).

This particular A321 was one of the LUS “Classic” A321s which are definitely the worse of the two sub-fleet types. There is no in seat power and no seatback IFE. Besides the ability to recline into the bulkhead behind me, the seat felt identical to the Spirit Airlines Big Front Seat. Seats are 21″ wide and have a pitch of 36″. Compare this to the LAA “Enhanced” A321s that have seatback entertainment, in seat power, and a whopping 39″ of pitch.

Awaiting us at each was a small blanket as well. No pillows were distributed.

4A

Boarding was slightly delayed by 20 minutes and we pushed back at 5:57PM local time. There was a surprising amount on Concierge Key members (3 total) on this flight. Flight attendants made no attempt to interact with the passengers and since I was in the bulkhead row another passenger (2A) asked me to hang his coat behind me….

No predeparture beverages were served and my seatmates request for some water was brusquely shutdown. We had a quick taxi to the runway and took off soon thereafter. Enjoy!

Once in the air flight attendants handed out warmed towels. Meal and beverage orders were taken at the same time. I think flight attendants went in order of status as she jumped around the cabin for orders. I went for a glass of red wine.

Streaming on board was with ViaSat. It was fast and the live TV had minimal pauses. I made a rookie mistake prior to the flight and forgot to charge my laptop. Since there was no individual seat power, my laptop died mid flight.

BYOD

Snack options where either a Fruit and Cheese plate or a Chipotle Black Bean Guacamole plate. I opted for the guac and it was excellent. It was served with a ramekin of toasted mixed nuts, bag of multigrain tortilla chips, and a small chocolate. The tray table was so small that I couldn’t fit my own device and the snack tray at once.

Chipotle Black Bean Guac

Once the snack tray was cleared, flight attendants offered another round of drinks. I love the AA branded glassware.

Red Wine

The rest of the flight was uneventful and we approached O’Hare from over Lake Michigan with a lovely view of downtown Chicago.

Enjoy our landing on 27L!

Despite the 20 minutes delay on departure, we landed in Chicago 10 minutes ahead of schedule. In summary, I’d say the flight attendants were indifferent and just went through the motions. Would I pay extra for LUS A321 business class with no seat power, a small tray table, and no IFE? Probably not. I’m just glad my upgrade cleared on this flight.

Trip Report: American Airlines (B767-300ER) Business MIA-PHL

The Details

  • Flight: AA2570
  • Aircraft: B767-300ER
  • Class: Domestic First/Business
  • Seat: 8G
  • Route: Miami International (MIA)-Philadelphia International (PHL)
  • Distance: 1,017 miles
  • Duration: 2hrs 40min
  • Departure: 1:49PM
  • Arrival: 4:09PM

The Preflight

I had originally booked an itinerary MIA-DFW on the B777-200ER and then DFW-ORD aboard the B787-8, but in true AA fashion, the inbound B777-200ER was delayed by four hours (mechanical?) causing me to miss my connection onto O’Hare. Hoping to at least snag a lie-flat seat home, I was able to get the last seat aboard the evening MIA-PHL flight and then onward aboard an A321 PHL-ORD.

American Airlines had two Admiral’s Clubs at Miami International Airport, both in Terminal D. One is near Gate D-15 and the other near D-30. I went to check out the D-30 Admiral’s Club which had amazing views of a B777.

The original boarding time of my MIA-DFW flight was supposed to be at 11:25AM. Since I was re-routed MIA-PHL, my new boarding time was 1:06PM. This gave me an additional hour and a half to explore MIA. I decided to check-out the AMEX Centurion Lounge near in Concourse D near gate D-12.

There were even better views of the apron in the AMEX lounge with views of the runway as well.

With 10 minutes until boarding, I made my way to Gate D40. I passed by some American heavies including this gorgeous B777.

Our B767-300ER today, registration N397AN, was delivered to American Airlines in March 1999. American Airlines currently has a fleet of 20 B767-300ERs which are scheduled to be retired by the end of 2020 next year. I had never flown up front on this aircraft type and I was glad to give them a try.

Boarding began on time at 1:06PM and gate agents announced that this was a completely full flight. I boarded after Concierge Key members in Group 1.

The Flight

American Airlines offers a total of 28 business class seats onboard their B767s in a staggered 1-2-1 configuration. The seats are Thompson Vantage seats which are similar to the business class seats aboard Austrian Airlines’ B777-200ERs.

I was seated in 8G, the last row in the center section of the business class cabin. Each seat was 20.6″ wide with 45″ of pitch.

8G (middle aisle)

The business cabin was one large cabin between doors 1 and 2. The entire cabin was full for this hub to hub flight today. The 767 also offers 21 Main Cabin Extra and 160 Main Cabin seats in a 2-3-2 configuration.

Cabin

There was a small tray table that folded down from the seatback as well as a standard sized literature pocket adjacent to the table.

Literature pocket and Tray Table Folded Up

Unfortunately, AA decided to defer installing IFE screens on their B767s. Instead, they installed a 110V power outlet which was supposed to power personal entertainment devices.

BYOD Plugin and Table

Below the personal device table was a tapered footwell which was about 14″ wide at the opening.

Foot-well

There was very limited storage space at the seat itself. A small pocket for shoes was located on the floor below the literature pocket.

Floor Storage Pocket

There was another small storage area on the console next to the seat. It was just large enough to hold a pair of headphones. The 110V at this location was not working (or not turned on?) for this flight.

Console Storage

The primary seat control was in the main console top next to the seat. There was a small remote while turned on the overhead light and mood lighting in the footwell. The leaf table was released by pressing the metal button.

Seat Controls

Since AA decided to go with BYOD streaming I realized that the AA app did not have a live in flight map tracker. Instead the map was shown on the ancient overhead TV.

Overhead TV Monitors

There were no pre-departure beverages served today because “the flight was still being catered” during the boarding process. We had a quick pushback and taxi to the runway and were airborne without delay.

Once in the air, I popped out the two-fold leaf table and put my laptop on the small tray table for IFE devices. The free entertainment included live TV and I was able to watch the Bears vs. Raiders game in London (Bears lost 21-24…) Video quality was good and the streaming speed had infrequent pauses.

BYOD and Table

Service began with a warm towel 15 minutes after take off. Flight attendants took drink and lunch orders back to front so I was first to place my order.

I had a Bloody Mary and was given an extra bottle of Tito’s vodka. The warmed nuts were excellent as usual.

Bloody Mary and Warmed Nuts

Lunch options were either Spinach and Ricotta cheese raviolini or a chopped salad.

I opted for the chopped salad with grilled chicken. The salad was actually quiet flavorful with blue cheese crumbles. I had both a sourdough roll (excellent) and a whole grain roll. The grilled chicken was nothing special and a bit bland.

Chopped Chicken Salad

After the meal flight attendants came by with a tray of gooey chocolate chip cookies. I asked for another ramekin of warmed nuts which was served promptly.

Chocolate Chip Cookie

All passengers were also provided a standard blanket. AA does not provide pillows in domestic business class. The bed itself was 78″ long was average but the foot well was very restrictive for my feet as I was unable to keep them upright if I were lying supine.

Lie Flat Mode

Halfway through the flight, flight attendants came by again and I request a warm cup of Joe.

Coffee

As we began our descent I watched the Bears snatch defect from the jaws of victory. Mints were distributed at this time.

In-flight Streaming

The approach into PHL was smooth and in no time we arrived at our gate. I had an hour layover in Philadelphia before my final flight back home to Chicago. Thanks for the ride!

Thanks for the Ride!

Flying hub-to-hub aboard AA is always a treat if onboard a widebody aircraft. Nothing can beat having a lie-flat bed on these short two hour flights. I found the flight attendants to be friendly on this flight as well despite the lack of predeparture beverages. The catering was exactly what I was expecting and I always appreciate the warmed cookies. All in all a great first time upfront on the B767.

Trip Report: American Airlines (A321) Main Cabin ORD-MIA

The Details

  • Flight: AA2498
  • Aircraft: A321
  • Class: Main Cabin
  • Seat: 25F
  • Route: Chicago O’Hare International (ORD)-Miami International (MIA)
  • Distance: 1,201 miles
  • Duration: 2hrs 31min
  • Departure: 6:14AM
  • Arrival: 9:42AM

The Preflight

I arrived at Chicago O’Hare Terminal 3 at about 4:30AM in the morning for my 6AM flight to Miami International Airport. The terminal was fairly empty and the TSA PreCheck line had only a handful of passengers.

Our A321 today, registration N154AA, was delivered brand new to American airlines in Jan 2016. She was one of the newer A321s, the “Enhanced” sub-fleet, which have Sharklets on the wings.

Boarding began at 5:25AM and was very fast.

The Flight

American Airlines currently has two distinct sub-fleets of A321s. The “Classic” A321 sub-fleet is made up of legacy US Airways (LUS) A321s. These planes lack seatback entertainment and have no power at the seats. The other sub-fleet is “Enhanced” with seatback screens and power at every seat. These A321s are the legacy American Airlines (LAA) A321s. Today’s aircraft was a legacy American Airlines A321.

Luckily, I was able to select my seat for $17 (despite being basic economy) and my favorite main cabin seat aboard the LAA A321s was still available. Seat 25F is a standard main cabin seat but has the most legroom aboard.

Seat 25F

The best thing about this seat is the unlimited legroom. Arguably better than first class upfront. While 25A on the other side faces the flight attendant jump seat, 25F does not.

Unlimited Legroom

The IFE screen was in the armrest and was responsive to touch. One downside to this seat is that it is narrower at 16.3″ wide (compared to regular Main Cabin at 17.7″ wide). I loaded up the flight map for the trip down to MIA.

Our route

There was no line for takeoff and within minutes we were airborne just as the sun was rising.

Early Morning Over Chicagoland

About 25 minutes into the flight, the crew came through with a beverage service. Biscoff cookies were also distributed.

Inflight Service

Since I had woken up so early this morning to catch this flight, I napped for about an hour. I awoke to the preparation for landing. There were amazing views of the Miami coastline.

Miami

We landed 15 minutes early and taxied immediately to a gate.

A321

Thanks for the ride!

This was a perfectly fine economy flight with American Airlines. The crew was friendly, seat comfortable, and I encountered no delays.

Trip Report: American Airlines (B787-9) Main Cabin Extra SYD-LAX

The Details

  • Flight: AA72
  • Aircraft: B787-9
  • Class: Main Cabin Extra
  • Seat: 12A and 12B
  • Route: Sydney Kingsford Smith International (SYD)-Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Distance: 7,618 miles
  • Duration: 13hrs 10min
  • Departure: 10:10AM
  • Arrival: 5:59AM

The Preflight

After spending a few lovely days on the North Island of New Zealand, it was time for my SO and I to return home. We had an early morning flight from Auckland to Sydney with Qantas on their A330 before our connecting flight to Los Angeles.

I had originally waitlisted both my SO and I for business class on this flight but alas the cabin was booked to capacity. Our flight was departing at 10:00AM from SYD which made our layover roughly two hours and 30 minutes.

We decided to check-out the AMEX International Lounge in Sydney which I had access to thanks to my AMEX Platinum card. It was very crowded but had excellent views of the apron.

With 20 minutes to boarding we left the lounge to walk towards our gate. We passed by a few widebodies including a Vietnam Airlines A350 and Cathay Pacific A330.

Boarding began on time at 9:10AM and was fairly orderly.

The B787-9 carrying us to Los Angeles, registration N820AL, was delivered brand new to American Airlines in Sept 2019. She was the very first B787-9 in the AA fleet.

The Flight

American Airlines offers 30 business, 21 premium economy, 36 Main Cabin, and 198 Main Cabin seats aboard their B787-9. Thanks to my AAdvantage status, I had managed to select two Main Cabin Extra seats in the bulkhead row for my SO and I. The Main Cabin seats were all arranged in a 3-3-3 configuration. There was 31″ of pitch. Because the tray table and IFE screen were stored in the armrest; the seat width was reduced to 16.2″.

Awaiting at the seat was a standard economy pillow and blanket.

12A Main Cabin Extra

There was ample legroom with enough space for me get into the aisle without having 12B and 12C get up from their seat.

Legroom Bulkhead

The IFE screen was fairly responsive to touch. However, the screen was tiny. The AA inflight entertainment options were excellent with a wide variety of new movies to choose from.

IFE Screen

Each seat was equipped with a USB port below the screen. There was an IFE remote stored in the armrest between the seats.

IFE remote

Directly on the bulkhead was a large screen which featured the flight map.

Airshow

Once the doors were closed, flight attendants came through the cabin handing out menus. It was a nice touch compared to what I was expecting (“chicken or beef?”)

We pushed back and began a long taxi to the runway passing by a Qantas A380 and a Jetstar 787.

Qantas A380
Jetstar 787

After a smooth takeoff we passed over the gorgeous Australian coast.

Australian Coast

30 minutes after takeoff, the crew came around with huge plastic bags filled with pretzels and went down the aisle handing them out. After that a flight attendant handed out hot towelettes.

Pretzels and Hot Towel

The beverage service began shortly after the towelettes were handed out. All beverages were free of charge (including hard liquor and wine). I decided to have the prosecco… which I regretted. It tasted like sugar water and the middle was completely frozen into an ice ball.

Prosecco and Water

For the main service, I chose the chilled sesame chicken with tabbouleh salad and sesame soy dressing. It was delicious. Easily one of the best economy meals I’ve had. The chicken was tender, the salad fresh, and the soy dressing perfectly flavorful. Dessert was chocolate mousse. The bread was cold and rock hard.

Chilled Sesame Chicken with Tabbouleh Salad, Chocolate Mousse

Halfway through the flight, about 6 hours after the main service, flight attendants came through with the mid-flight snack. The “Angus Beef Pie” was toasted and smelled good. However, I could taste how many calories were in it after a few bites and decided against finishing it. The ice cream bar was frozen solid but after a few minutes was good. There was another beverage service.

Angus Beef Pie, Weis Ice Cream Bar

The arrival meal was served about 90 minutes prior to landing. Eggs were of standard economy quality. The bacon slightly chewy and potatoes cooked through. There was a side of Greek yogurt and granola and a muffin.

Traditional American Breakfast, Greek Yogurt, Granola, Apple Cinnamon Muffin

With about 60 minutes to go, flight attendants unlocked the windows and I could see the sun rise as we passed along the California coast.

Sunrise

We arrived at Gate 41 and waited about 10 minutes for a tow. The walk from Terminal 4 to Tom Bradley IT was another 10 minutes. Thanks to Global Entry we cruised through CBP. Thanks for the ride!

All in all, the 13 hours on AA72 passed by fairly quickly as I managed to get about seven hours of sleep. The Main Cabin Extra seats are an economical way to fly across the pacific (especially if the upgrades do not clear) in relative comfort. However, if I were older or wider, I would have definitely been more uncomfortable.

Trip Report: American Airlines (MD-83) Main Cabin MKE-DFW

The Details

  • Flight: AA2762
  • Aircraft: MD-83
  • Class: Main Cabin
  • Seat: 29F
  • Route: Milwaukee Mitchell International (MKE)-Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW)
  • Distance: 854 miles
  • Duration: 2hrs 6min
  • Departure: 10:04AM
  • Arrival: 12:09PM

The Preflight

I decided that it was finally time for me to take a flight on the “Mad Dog” MD80s and booked this trip to originate in Milwaukee instead of Chicago O’Hare. Luckily, American Airlines was running a daily MKE-DFW flight with their MD83.

There is no Admirals Club or other lounge that I could have accessed at MKE Airport (only lounge is a Delta SkyClub) so I arrived just an hour before departure. Check-in was quick and thanks to PreCheck I was airside within 10 minutes of being dropped off.

Our MD-83 today, registration N9621A, had a very illustrious career in the aviation world. She was initially delivered to Trans World Airlines brand new in June 1998. After the TWA and AA merger, she was transferred to American in December 2001 and has been flying for AA since.

Boarding began promptly at 9:31AM via Door 1L.

The Flight

American Airlines offers 16 first, 35 Main Cabin Extra, and 89 Main Cabin seats onboard their MD-83s. They still have the vintage American Airlines seats from the early 2000s instead of the newer slimline seats. While there was no seatback entertainment screen, this aircraft was equipped with WiFi and the AA inflight entertainment could be streamed on a personal device.

The economy cabin was set in a 2-3 configuration with the left side not having a middle seat.

I actually declined to select a Main Cabin Extra seat (due to my AAdvantage status) and instead chose to sit in row 29F just so I could get a view of the JT8D engines. We pushed back at 10:04AM and had a very quick taxi to runway 1L.

Enjoy the roar of the JT8D engines!

It was a beautiful day in Milwaukee and there were excellent views of downtown.

Service began once we reached cruising altitude. The beverage cart came down the aisle and each passenger was also given a Biscoff cookie. I had a cup of hot black coffee.

I spent the entire flight completely infatuated with the aircraft and gazing out the window.

As we neared Dallas-Ft. Worth we made a close pass above the airport.

Here’s the landing!

As I disembarked, I snapped a picture of the plaque in the boarding door.

Thanks for the ride!

With about two hours until my connecting flight to San Diego, I decided to take the Skylink train a few times around the airport to plane spot. I managed to capture quiet of few of the remaining AA MD-83s.

Trip Report: American Airlines (B757-200) Domestic First PHX-SAN

The Details

  • Flight: AA465
  • Aircraft: B757-200
  • Class: Domestic First
  • Seat: 1F
  • Route: Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX)-San Diego International (SAN)
  • Distance: 338 miles
  • Duration: 1hr 10min
  • Departure: 7:52AM
  • Arrival: 8:44AM

The Preflight

After my flight from Chicago O’Hare landed at 6:30AM, I had an hour until my connecting flight to San Diego departed at 7:35AM. Luckily, at the check-in open at 24-hours my upgrade had cleared and I was seated in Domestic First.

I made my way to the gate area to catch a show of our beautiful B757-200, registration N206UW. She was delivered to USAir back in 1995, with registration N630AU, before USAir rebranded as US Airways in 1997. Then during the US Airways merger with America West in 2006 her registration changed to N206UW. Finally, in 2015 she was transferred to the American Airlines fleet after the US Airways-American Airlines merger.

On board, there were 12 Domestic First class seats in a 2-2 configuration across the first three rows between the first and second seat of doors. This plane also had 38 Main Cabin Extra seats as well as 138 Main Cabin seats all in a 3-3 configuration.

The first class seats were similar to the ones aboard the “Classic” American Airlines B737-800s. There were no seatback screens and instead AA has installed universal power outlets at every seat upfront.

Boarding began promptly at 7:05AM and the doors closed at 7:52AM. We were slightly delayed by twenty minutes.

After take-off there were some great views of Phoenix.

Since this flight was less than 500 miles, service was brief and minimal. First, flight attendants came through offering a round of drinks. I had a cup of coffee. Then they passed around a snack basket with an assortment of chips and chocolates.

In no time, the captain announced that we were beginning our descent into San Diego. As we approached runway 27 I had some great views of Balboa park.

This flight was very uneventful and was the first time that I was sitting upfront on a B757-200. Thanks to a complimentary upgrade, I got to sit in the very front of the cabin and enjoyed the brief inflight service. Until next time American!

Trip Report: American Airlines (B737-800) Domestic First SFO-ORD

The Details

  • Flight: AA2594
  • Aircraft: B737-800
  • Class: Domestic First
  • Seat: 3A
  • Route: San Francisco International (SFO)-Chicago O’Hare International (ORD)
  • Distance: 1,844 miles
  • Duration: 4hrs 8min
  • Departure: 9:35AM
  • Arrival: 3:13PM

The Preflight

After a very fun New Years Eve catching up with some of my college friends, I made my way to SFO in the early morning of New Years Day.

Boarding began at 8:55AM and I was booked into Main Cabin Extra. As the gate agent was scanning my boarding pass, I was informed that I had been upgraded to First. Thanks AAdvantage!

The Flight

Our bird N907NN, was a B737-800 delivered to American Airlines in June 2012. There were 16 First Class seats across four rows arranged in a 2-2 configuration. In addition, there were 30 Main Cabin Extra seats and 114 Main Cabin seats.

Row 3 was actually the very first row of the First class cabin. There was about 40″ of pitch and each seat was 20.4″ wide. This aircraft was one of the “Classic” B737s in Americans fleet that lacks seatback screens. Instead, the IFE was available via AAs inflight Wi-Fi to be streamed on a personal device or tablet.

Predeparture beverages were offered and I had a glass of water.

We pushed back on time at 9:35AM and without delay were in the air.

Service began with a beverage service and I had another glass of water. Breakfast was served on this flight as well. Options included a cheese omelet or oatmeal, both served with fresh fruit and Greek yoghurt. Flight attendants also brought a bread basket out with warmed biscuits and bagels.

I opted for the cheese omelet that also had two breakfast sausages and some potatoes. The meal was very tasty and harty.

We passed over some snow covered fields of Nebraska. Once we approached O’Hare we did a pass over frozen Lake Michigan.

We also had great views of the Chicagoland suburbs on our landing approach.

Our plane landed at 3:13PM local time at O’Hare a few minutes ahead of schedule.

All in all, this was a great flight thanks to my last minute upgrade clearance as an AAdvantage Platinum elite. The flight attendants were friendly and the breakfast tasty.
